SIAM: Mathematics in Industry ABOUT SIAM

Mathematics in Industry

Have you wondered about sharing with your students the experience of solving mathematical problems in business, industry, and government? Learning more about the practice of mathematics outside of academia? Building better relations with non-academic organizations in your area? To address issues like these, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) with the support of the National Science Foundation sponsors a series of regional meetings focused on the theme Mathematics in Industry. The first phase of the Mathematics in Industry (MII) study, performed by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) with support from the National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency, sought to: examine the roles of mathematics outside academia; characterize the working environments of nonacademic mathematicians; summarize the views of nonacademic mathematicians and their managers on the skills needed for success and the preparation provided by traditional graduate education; suggest strategies for enhancing graduate education in mathematics, nonacademic career opportunities for mathematicians, and application of mathematics in nonacademic environments. The findings of this report involve both mathematics as a discipline and mathematicians as practitioners of that discipline.
