Two more Ph.Ds…

November 14, 2008 Two more Ph.Ds. Congratulations to Jakob Petersen and Hanif Rahemtulla on the successful outcomes of their Ph.D. vivas. Both were passed with only minor changes suggested or required - Jakob’s viva was on 4 November (examiners Rich Harris and Andrew Lovett) and Hanif’s on the following day (examiners Bob Barr and Tao Cheng). Jakob now works as a phamaco-epidemiologist and Hanif is working with Renee Sieber at McGill University, Canada, on a PPGIS Project. Category: | News |

Graduation Day

September 9, 2008 Graduation day is always a special occasion, however when someone eminent in your field is receiving an honorary degree during the same ceremony this adds an extra sparkle. From Wikipedia: Peter Haggett, CBE Sc.D. FBA (b. January 24, 1933)[1] is an eminent British geographer and academic, Professor Emeritus and Senior Research Fellow in Urban and Regional Geography at the School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol. In an academic career spanning half a century, Professor Haggett is noted for his significant research contributions to the field of human geography, and is the author or editor of over 30 books on geographical practice, theory and individual research topics. In the latter half of his career Haggett specialised in the geographical study of epidemiology and the spatial relationships and distribution of infectious diseases. He has held numerous teaching posts and visiting professorships at institutions around the world, but is most particularly associated with the University of Bristol where he has been a lecturer and professor of geography since 1966. Among the many awards and distinguished recognitions conferred, Haggett was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 1993, for “services to urban and regional geography”.The Department of Geography held a small reception for as Peter Haggett before the official proceedings…Our four CASA/Geography graduates (quantified in height order) from left to right are, Dr Andrew Crooks, Dr Alex Singleton, Dr Pablo Mateos, [Professor Paul Longley - wearing his dashing felt robe] and finally Dr Christian Castle. World Surnames!

September 2, 2008 On Friday 29th August we launched our worldnames mapping service. This has been picked up by a great number of news outlets all round the world. Over the weekend we have had around 250,000 people visit the site which has unfortunately caused a number of technical errors to emerge. We are busy fixing the site and hope to have it back up to full speed soon! Thank you for your patience.Press Coverage:BBC Online - [link]BBC Radio 4 - [link] and [link]The Independent [link]Channel4 news - [link]Telegraph - [link]The Scotsman - [link]The Press Association [link]New Zealand Herald - [link]SG.HU (Hungary)- [link]ZDNet.de (Germany)- [link]Telekom Presse (Austria) - [link]Presstext (Germany)[link]Globo (Brazil) - [link]Yahoo News Hong Kong (Hong Kong) - [link]Saigon Giai Phong Online (Vietnam) - [link]News.com.au (Australia) [link]Mbl.is (Iceland) [link]Computerwoche.de (Germany) [link]WebUser - [link]Worthing Herald - [link]Portugal Diario - [link]The Dominion Post - [link] Category: | News, Press | « Previous Entries Spatial-Literacy.org is powered by WordPress - Adapted from a template by RFDN | Entries (RSS) | st_go({blog:'1717687',v:'ext',post:'0'}); var load_cmc = function(){linktracker_init(1717687,0,2);}; if ( typeof addLoadEvent != 'undefined' ) addLoadEvent(load_cmc); else load_cmc();
