Greening Events

Sappi Sunday Picnic Concert at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town, South AfricaOrganised events that bring many people together can often be a valuable opportunity for awareness-raising, learning and creating a new culture of caring for natural, social and financial resources. But these same events pose significant problems for local natural resources, (e.g. energy, water), environment (e.g. caused by emissions, waste, soil degradation) and the community. An event can be considered “green” if it is designed, organised and staged in accordance with sustainability principles, with a special focus on environmental, health and social concerns. The goals are to use as few natural resources as possible, reduce waste to a minimum, and protect biodiversity and human health. At the same time, opportunities are used for rehabilitating land, improving living conditions, designing sustainable post-event use, saving financial resources and raising awareness among citizens and visitors.  Starting an initiative on “Greening Events”Local governments have a range of possibilities for applying sustainability principles in the design, preparation and staging of events for which they act as organisers or local hosts. Over the last years ICLEI's International Training Centre has been promoting new approaches and new standards to reduce this impact. The Greening Events Initiative is especially relevant to local governments. All events – small or major, international or local, sporting or cultural events – have one thing in common: a local community providing services and managing the environmental, social and financial impacts. The term “greening events” describes a range of activities that apply sustainability principles in the design, preparation and staging of events for which local governments act as organisers or local hosts. ICLEI and the World Conservation Union (IUCN) are working in partnership on the initiative. The IUCN was responsible for greening the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg 2002, where the term "greening events" was coined and will focus on event organisers, sponsors and the public while ICLEI's will focus on local government. The term "greening events" is used for branding event organisation activities that address social, health and economic concerns. To drive the initiative, a series of action modules have been drafted and funders are currently being sought in order to support their development and implementation.   International Symposium on Greening EventsRecognising the needs of local governments in this area, ICLEI members passed the “Athens Call for Greening Events” in 2003, and subsequently organised the International Symposium on Green Events, 19-21 September 2004, hosted by ICLEI member the City of Barcelona, Spain. At the symposium world leaders in event management met to discuss experiences, solutions and to form a plan of action. A major result of the symposium was the unanimous endorsement of the “Greening Events Initiative” and accelerating the co-operation of actors. The basis for this initiative is provided by: an Action Plan including projects and programmes for which support will be sought in the next months, management principles for including sustainability criteria in event organisation, a model code of conduct for green event planning, a draft set of recommendation for objectives and standards to event organisers, the creation of a loose network for co-operation.See also the results of the symposium for further details.  Host search for the 2nd International Symposium on Greening EventsICLEI is currently searching for a host for the 2nd International Symposium on Greening Events. Interested cities should contact us to discuss possibilities.  Key documentsGreening Events Initiative short description - English (Word, 368Kb) Final report of the 1st International Symposium on Greening Events 2004:English (PDF, 165Kb) Spanish (PDF, 436Kb) Catalan (PDF, 435Kb)Athens Call for Greening Events (PDF, 32Kb)The five main aims of the "Greening Events" initiativeTo reduce negative local and global impacts on the environment and on citizens, while at the same time promoting the positive effects of events. To inform, involve and motivate a variety of actors in the field of large-scale event organisation and to start a continuous and worldwide process of environmental and social improvements in event organisation. To foster sustainable behaviour by using the opportunities offered by events for raising awareness of sustainability principles and actions. Events are excellent occasions to showcase examples with educational aims to the many participants. To allow the experiences and lessons learnt from large-scale events to be shared and good practices to be replicated by the hundreds of thousands of local events that happen each year. These local events are less prominent but often very relevant in terms of visitor numbers or local impacts. In addition, as they often reflect cultural or political traditions, most of them take place periodically. Developing a new culture of local event organisation provides ample learning opportunities and will result in significant improvements to their design and execution. To set standards for greening events to which host municipalities, citizens, organisers, sponsors and approval authorities can to refer to when searching for environmentally and socially acceptable solutions. In addition, innovative standards will challenge the business sector as new goals will require improved products; and new behaviour of event participants will create unexpected demands.Activities contributing to the achievement of these aims are outlined in the Action Plan.
