Convened by Lord Nicholas Stern, the discussions are aimed at developing a framework for a global deal which could be considered at the UNFCCC COP-15 meeting in Copenhagen in 2009.   Nebojsa Nakicenovic speaks at the European Parliament    At the invitation of Franz Fischler, Nebojsa Nakicenovic, IIASA's Acting Deputy Director, recently spoke on "Low-carbon technologies and risk management" at the European Parliament. The aim of the Conference, "A Global Contract Based on Climate Justice — The Need for a New Approach Concerning International Relations" was to send a widely recognized signal from the European Parliament to the forthcoming UNFCCC negotiations in Poznan and later in Copenhagen.   Advanced Investigator Grant to Wolfgang Lutz    IIASA's Wolfgang Lutz was awarded the prestigious Advanced Investigator Grant of the European Research Council. The ambitious study on "Forecasting societies' adaptive capacity to climate change" has been granted 2.5 million Euros. Using demographic forecasting techniques, it will focus in particular on the role of education and includes in-depth case studies. The 2009 application will be open from 1 October 2008 until 19 January 2009.   Linking the evolution of transport systems with economic growth    New research by IIASA scientists Sabine Fuss, Benjamin Ortiz, and Jana Szolgayova uses optimal control theory and scenarios to assess how a country’s transport infrastructure may evolve in the context of that country's projected economic growth. The research was presented at a recent IIASA workshop linking dynamic systems to economic growth and the environment.   UN-IIASA Cooperation on Global Change    The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with IIASA’s Acting Director Sten Nilsson and his Special Advisor Chin Min Lee on 13 October at the UN HQ in New York to discuss possible future cooperation on systems oriented policy advice on global change issues. The UN Secretary-General agreed to IIASA assisting him regularly on issues of his concern. The next meeting is expected in mid-2009.
