The purposeof the Network Major, minor, trace and ultra constituents ofmetals and other solids, present as impurities or deliberately introduced,can significantly influence the mechanical, physical, electrical, thermaland other properties of the material. Rapid, accurate and sensitive methodsof elemental analysis are essential for materials research, quality controlin production, the testing of protective layers and the study of corrosionand ageing. The analysis should be performed in the solid phase, withoutdissolution or other preparative treatment. This is possible with glowdischarge (GD) sources used with either optical emission spectroscopy (OES)(limits of detection in the µg/g (ppm) range) or mass spectrometry(MS) (for the ng/g (ppb) range). The sample forms the cathode of an electricaldischarge in a low pressure inert gas; under suitable conditions, the cathodeis eroded uniformly across the area exposed to the discharge, so that depthprofile analyses can also be carried out. Non-conductors as well as conductingmaterials can be analyzed using a radio frequency powered source.The techniques are used industrially but researchand development on many aspects is still in progress or is needed. TheAnalytical GDS Thematic Network will operate for three years from January1999. Its overall objective is to assist in the development and extensionof the range of applications of analytical methods using GD sources withOES or MS, through greater contact and collaboration between groups dealingwith the fundamentals of glow discharges, the development of instrumentationand methods and analytical applications.The diagram below indicates the topics coveredby the Network, some of the linkages, and also related topics outside thescope of the Network
