My latest book is Trick or Treatment? Alternative Medicine on Trial, which I have co-authored with Edzard Ernst, the word’s first professor of complementary medicine – more news soon. Trick or Treatment? Alternative Medicine on Trial – released April 21 The aim of this site is to let you know what I am currently working on and to provide more background about my previous projects. For example, I have just written a book about alternative medicine – Trick or Treatment? is published on April 21 and I will be providing more information soon. My previous book was entitled Big Bang – you can find more details here. Or in 1996 I made a BBC documentary about Fermat’s Last Theorem - at this site you can read the transcript and find out what went on behind the scenes. These TV doc pages sit inside the Fermat Corner, where you will also find a Fermat’s Last Theorem quiz, some trivia, pages about the wacky side of Fermat, mathematical and historical material, and details of my book on the subject – the first mathematical book to be a UK No.1 bestseller! In fact, there is a ton of Fermat-related material and lots of other pages about mathematics in general, cryptography, my books, other science books and a whole load of other things that just happened to tickle my somewhat fickle fancy. And over the coming months more material will be added to the site. Visit Crypto Corner to find out about my Enigma machine. The Code Book on CD-ROM - Free download... click here You can haphazardly explore the site, but here are some guides that will help you: 1. the sitemap, 2. left menu bar, categorising pages by subject, e.g., crypto or Fermat, 3. top menu bar, categorising my work by media, e.g., TV or books, 4. the highlights below. Big Bang It's taken me a couple of years, but at last I have finished writing Big Bang, my history of the theory that describes the origin and evolution of the universe. I tell the story of the cosmologists who invented the Big Bang theory and the astronomers who made the observations that eventually proved that it was true. Along the way, I try to describe how science works in general. The Code Book In 1999 I published The Code Book, a history of codes and code breaking from Ancient Egypt to the Internet. You can read sections of the book, find out how it was written and buy signed copies. To learn more about codes, visit the Crypto Corner. Black ChamberThis is the latest addition to the website. It's a fun, interactivesection of the site which allows you to encipher your own text, crack some coded messages and learn about thehistory and development of codes over the centuries. Theatre of Science The aim is to make science a hot night out by presenting humorous and thought-provoking lectures in a theatrical space. We've already had a successful run at London's Soho Theatre and the Edinburgh Fringe in August. TelevisionAs a media heading, this includes material about all my TV work, from working on Tomorrow’s World to directing Fermat’s Last Theorem, from presenting the Science of Secrecy to how I got into TV and my tips for getting a career in television. ArticlesAnother media heading, this time containing a partial archive of my articles. It will become filled over the coming months, but already you can read my most recent article, about the strange link between Gwyneth Paltrow and Paul Erdos. Biography Websites were invented to accommodate self-indulgence. This section is a nostalgic look back at my career, with photos of the various milestones, such as working on Tomorrow’s World and filming on an active volcano. There is also a copy of my CV. Fermat’s Last TheoremMy first book was Fermat’s Last Theorem, and this was also the subject of my BBC documentary. Find out about the book, the documentary, the T-shirt, the theorem, the man who invented it, the man who proved it and the Broadway musical. You could even try the Fermat Quiz. NewsletterThis site will grow, with new articles, sections and gizmos appearing every few weeks. To be updated about new features or my new projects, please sign-up to my monthly newsletter, which has a prize competition in each issue. LecturesAlthough I don’t have much time, I still continue to give occasional lectures. This section includes details of my forthcoming public lectures, as well as list of websites containing information about other science lectures. Crypto CD-ROMThere is a CD-ROM available containing all of the code-breaking tools seen in the Black Chamber, plus lots more. The CD-ROM is designed for use by teachers, schoolchildren and amateur codebreakers alike. It contains an Enigma emulator.
