Project Manager And designer: Erol Bars Engineer support: Phil Orlosky Mechanical Engineer support :Bob Borshel: Herb Sedita: Walter Parks.  This installation may lead to production of long lived radionuclides. Characteristic of the cyclotron are presently : range of proton energy 14.5MeV to 31.1MeV for 0-350uA peak to 515uA . The  beam ratio will be less than 1 % between the stripper and the target station... -See other Related Targets Projects for F-18 and N-13 Production. -Recovery Module for F18 New C11 Target (Nemo) Semi Automated C11 Choline Acetate Module. Method of distribution of radioactive liquid product from the cyclotron targets to the hotcell labs TronTOPUPview.JPG (210560 bytes) 30MeV - Cyclotron (other View) Psn00001.jpg (198837 bytes) View of the beam line going into the target vault This first coil of the beam line is the steering x-y axis that will control  the horizontal and vertical adjustments. The weak magnetic field (180gauss) will bend the beam 20mm at 3000mm. The tuning power supply is controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC) and all parameters may be stored. PSN00004.JPG (190991 bytes) Top view of the beam line from the cyclotron vault . The first block after the steering magnet is the collimator entrance. This will trace and measure the beam profile for right and left tuning . The collimator is cooled by water and will have a maximum rated current of approximately 250uA on each side. If the beam is more than 250uA the PLC will decrease the ion source of the cyclotron to a lower current mode to avoid a catastrophe! Below the collimator (see picture above) is a diffusion pump and a mechanical pump which produces a beam line vacuum of 1.0 10-6 mbar. An identical  pump assembly is also located at  the end of the beam line.      Next to the collimator is the quadrupole  magnet. This device focuses the beam into a very dense beam spot of approximately 3mm in diameter. The center of the quad produces a magnetic field of 3500 gauss. The current and voltage in the coil (water cooled) will be 90A and 20vdc   which is also regulated by the PLC. When the stream of  negative ions exit the magnetic field of the cyclotron, it has the tendency to divert in the horizontal plane because of  the strong magnetic field of the switching magnet. The first quadrupole will correct this "offset" divergence in the horizontal axis.  =>H<= The second quadrupole will converge the beam in the vertical axis offset created  from the first quad. The third quadrupole performs horizontal focusing .     PSN00005.JPG (178574 bytes)Trgroom1.jpg (218545 bytes)Trgroom2.jpg (220803 bytes) View of the beam line from the target vault. After the quadrupole magnet is the neutron shutter (the square box). This device will close the opening  line when the cyclotron  is running. The neutron shutter is able to rotate in it`s chamber, thus obstructing the path of  neutrons coming from the cyclotron vault. Therefore one has the ability to work in the solid target room while the cyclotron is running in the main vault. PSN00008.JPG (52321 bytes) View of faraday - viewer station from the target vault This station provide you a pre-tune view of the beam. The viewer is tilted at 45 degrees and is made of a tantalum foil (0.1mm thick, coated with a thin layer of alumina). A camera is placed on the Pyrex window. This gives you a dynamic view of  the protons and allows one to optimally shape the beam. Due to poor thermal conductivity of the alumina, the viewer is water cooled.    Additionally when a proton strikes the alumina it emits a photon. Next to the viewer is the faraday, a useful device for maximizing the beam before bombardment. The faraday and the viewer are the same design but are tilted slightly differently. The faraday is a water cooled  tantalum foil, 0.1mm thick, tilted at 90 degrees, and can handle more than 500uA at 32Mev. PSN00014.JPG (185993 bytes)LASERTRG.JPG (40702 bytes) Optical viewer from the target station. This station will be placed at the end of the beam line. The viewer has collimator fingers for x and y axis tuning and a beam dump on the extreme end. The target will be placed at 7 degrees. This will provide greater surface area for the irradiation while reducing any "hot" spots due to the high current beam. After the irradiation (length of irradiation will depend on the desired isotope)  the radioactive target will be remotely removed and placed into a shuttle system. This PLC controlled device will transport the material into the radiochemistry lab for final processing.                               "Cold" simulated target - laser beam showing the beam profile. 7deg trg assembly flp open.jpg (67565 bytes)7deg trg assembly + insert.jpg (51992 bytes) 3 D View Of 7 deg target assembly with Foil isolation chamber Opened.
